It’s happening again. Everybody seems to be focused on the fact that Christmas is closing in on us, but what about Thanksgiving? I love Thanksgiving, not just for the food but also for the family get together. Even though I work at the family business and see them most everyday the mood is always much more festive at the Sommerfelt Thanksgiving get together. That had to be said before I get to the topic of this article, so I don’t get put in the same category as the stores that seem to have forgotten this important holiday.
I understand the society that we live in today and have been told by my wife and sisters the day after Thanksgiving is very important to them and that I needed to get the fishermen Christmas list out a bit earlier this year. I'm not going to put them in any particular order other than I will start with the number one gift that I think any fisherman would love – a new Tracker boat of course. I know you think a new boat is way too much to spend on Christmas but you can take the credit for a magnificent gift by just getting the ball rolling. Simply stop by Waterloo Boats on Franklin street, fill out some pre-qualifying paper work and take home a catalog to wrap up for Christmas morning. If your fisherman already has a boat you can pick up something from their huge accessory department like boat bumpers, keel guard, depth/fish finder or maybe a propeller.
Tackle is always a good choice. Quality spinnerbaits and jigs can be had by stopping by First Cast Bait & tackle or get Little Mike's lures at Hank’s bait and tackle. Both are located Waterloo. First Cast Bait & Tackle is your Bass Pro Shop ordering headquarters and has gift certificates available. If you are not sure what to get for your fisherman, one of the knowledgeable staff members at these fine stores will be glad to help. Just have a little basic information for them like where they fish and what they fish for and First Cast Bait & Tackle or Hank’s will fix you up with the perfect gift.
With thousands of fishing items to choose from there is sure to be something for every budget. A 2009 fishing license would make a fantastic stocking stuffer and can be purchased online at iowadnr.com. Don’t forget if your fisherman is over 65 years old they qualify for a lifetime license.
Magazine subscriptions make wonderful gifts; two of the best for bass fisherman are Bassmaster magazine available at Bassmaster.com and FLW outdoors available at flwoutdoors.com. There are hundreds of magazines that cover every specie of fish like In-Fisherman. If you are still unsure what to get the fisherman on your list I would be more than happy to help. Email me at cvs@mchsi.com or call the Cedar Valley Saver office at (319) 232-4500. Leave your number and I will return your call. I hope everyone has a great holiday. Until next time keep your lure wet!
*Correction on November 20th article: The article states it was Iowa Whitetails that donated the bows for demonstrations at Double Lung Archery. The club's correct name is Whitetails Unlimited. We apologize for the error.
